New York Times Uses Cloaking to Increase Search Engine Traffic

The venerable newspaper has opened its premium content for full search indexing. When a browser comes to visit the content however, the Times instead displays an abstract of the indexed story with a login form to access premium content. The article claims that Google and Yahoo are aware of the cloaking and are looking the other way due to their desire to have the content nonetheless in their indexes. The article also goes on to describe other optimization strategies used by the Times. Their efforts have seen search engine hits increase 59% at the NYTimes.com site.
